What is the difference between skimming and full plastering?
Skimming applies a thin 2–3 mm coat of finish plaster over an existing surface. It is ideal when the base is sound and just needs smoothing. Full plastering involves applying a backing coat (bonding or hardwall) followed by a finish skim, used on bare blockwork, brick, or new partitions.
Can you plaster over existing walls without removing the old plaster?
In many cases yes. If the existing plaster is solid and well bonded, we can apply a skim coat directly over it. If the old plaster is blown, cracked, or damp, we will advise stripping it back first to ensure the new finish doesn't fail.
How long should I wait before painting after plastering?
New plaster needs to dry fully before painting, typically 4–6 weeks for full plaster, or 1–2 weeks for a skim coat in a well-ventilated room. We recommend a diluted 'mist coat' of emulsion as the first coat to allow moisture to continue escaping.
Can you remove artex ceilings?
Yes, we remove artex and skim ceilings to a smooth finish. Older artex (pre-1980s) may contain low levels of chrysotile asbestos, so we always carry out a test before starting. If asbestos is present, we arrange safe removal by a licensed contractor before replastering.
Do you do patch repairs or only full rooms?
We take on both. Patch repairs after pipe work, electrics, or structural alterations are a regular part of our work. We will feather the repair to blend as well as possible with the surrounding surface.
